Whether you are just starting up or have come quite a way in your makeup journey, you may always find a rehashing of the basics helpful. Even a minor change in your routine can boost your game significantly. So before you jump on the hows, let’s first cover the basic makeup products that make for the face makeup combo you’d usually find in a regular makeup kit.

A Complete Catalog of Essential Makeup Products

You don’t necessarily need all of the products mentioned below. Find the ones you think you might find helpful by incorporating them into your makeup routine and get working!

      • Primer -

Primers come in various solutions from sprays to creams, and are used to transform your face into a blank and clear canvas, for you to work your makeup on. It helps you in filling up any pores, wrinkles, and fine lines, giving you a smooth finish at the end. It also helps in making sure that your makeup doesn’t look cakey or wears off too soon.

      • Eye-Shadow Primer:

These primers are specifically concocted for your eyes, and come with even a sturdier and longer-lasting grip than the primer for your face. It also helps your eye makeup flush better but may be restricted to some of your makeup products that are limited for the eye, such as smudging pencils or cream-based eyeshadows.

      • Lip Primer -

Lipsticks often run a chance of bleeding out, especially in summers. Lip Primers reduce the risk of that happening and also helps in creating a more even base for you to paint on a gorgeous pout.

      • Eye Shadow -

These too come in several formulas, more commonly so in powdered form. These are pigmented in varying concentrations and come in an array of hues and textures. Shimmery, shiny, or satin, there’s a finish for every occasion.

      • Eyebrow Pencil -

Eyebrow pencils are specially formulated with wax-like formulas, which help you in filling your eyebrows with the most natural-looking brow hairs. While you can use a mascara brush and other products to do your eyebrows, the clear winner in attaining the most natural-looking finish would be an eyebrow pencil.

      • Eyeliner -

A little bit of eyeliner saves the day a long way. Not feel like going through the whole makeup routine, yet have to show up to any occasion or event? Simply just drawing on a little eyeliner can uplift your appeal and offer you a clean, simple, and elegant appearance,

      • Eyebrow Gel -

Eyebrow gel is like hairspray but for your brow hairs. It helps you in tinting your brows and keeping your brow hairs in place giving it a fulfilling, solid, and natural finish.

      • Mascara -

Don’t have the most luscious pair of lashes but also don’t want to go overboard with a pair of fake ones? A Mascara will be your savior. It’ll enhance your lashes and have them appear much darker, thicker, and longer.

      • Foundation -

A foundation is what you usually use after a primer, and it further helps in covering up any imperfection. The primary purpose is to make your skin tone even. You can choose the amount of coverage you want from your foundation, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be full coverage. You can simply settle for a slightly tinted moisturizer for it to do the job.

      • Concealer -

Concealers do what their name entails, cover up dark circles, any redness in your skin, acne scars, skin breakouts, and so on. Concealers too, like foundations, offer varying levels of coverage. You can always get the best foundation and concealer combo

      • Blush -

You’ll find a blush even in the most basic makeup kit, and is used usually to add a bit of a flush to your cheeks. You can get blushes in an array of shades and can pair them up appropriately according to the rest of your makeup, to make it look more natural.

      • Bronzer -

Bronzers come in various textures such as creams or powders, and are often used to add a little bit of glow to your skin and have your facial features become more radiant. For instance, lifting your cheekbones, having your lips get a more prominent shape, and so on.

      • Highlighter -

Highlighters have been popularized quite lately, especially through influencers and models sharing their makeup tips to having such shapely chiseled faces. Highlighters and contours go hand in hand and are much like editing a picture, where the highlighter helps bring the light forward onto your face.

      • Contour -

If the highlighter helps in lightening your face up, contours bring out the shadowy effect which is usually the secret behind the picture-perfect jawlines, chiseled noses, and sharp cheekbones.

      • Lip Pencil -

No one wants a smudged lipstick. And what keeps you from that, is a lip pencil. Before painting your lip, draw in an outline with a lip pencil and give your lips a much more filling and prominent shape.

      • Lipstick -

Lipsticks, much like eyeshadows, come in an assortment of shades and textures, if not more. A little colored lip, much like an eyeliner can give you a simple and polished appearance, saving you on the days you don’t want to do much with your makeup.

      • Setting Spray/Powder -

Imagine painting a gorgeous face makeup after sitting stiffly before the mirror for hours, and then having it all ruined in a short time. Nothing may be more upsetting. This is why one needs to invest in a good setting spray or powder to make sure the makeup stays on, possibly even through the sweat and the sun.

      A Beginner Makeup Routine

Now that you know what are the products that usually go into a full-fledged makeup routine, it’s time to build one. Make sure you get products that are careful to your skin’s needs. Your face is your temple and you need to take care of its sanctity, otherwise, it can lead to irreversible skin problems. If you have dry skin look for products that are hydrating, if you’re gifted with a combination skin look up the best makeup for combo skin, and so on. So, here we go, here’s a step-by-step breakdown of a basic makeup routine.

      Step 1: Prepping Your Face

Before jumpstarting your makeup routine, it is necessary for you to prepare your face and create a clean and even face. Start off with a face cleanser or a face wash and rid your face of any remaining dirt particles. Not cleaning your face before applying makeup can cause breakouts from the dirt that gets trapped between the layers.

Secondly, take a moisturizer preferably with SPF protection to keep your skin from getting sunburnt. You can merge the two and settle for a moisturizer cum primer, or opt for individual products each. The moisturizer also acts as a protective layer to your skin, also acting as a soft and even base for your foundation.

Step 2: Start with Foundation and Concealer

Once your work with the primer is done, grab your friendly foundation. When buying foundation, make sure you follow all the steps from choosing the right skin tone to settling for a formula that takes care of your skin’s needs. For instance, if you have dry skin you should reach for a liquid foundation.

Once you’ve readied the base, take your concealer and apply it to the areas that you feel need work. Cover up any blemishes, or dark circles or simply just apply it on areas you want to brighten up.

You might also want to set your face with powder by getting a compact and foundation combo that ensures similar tones of the products.

Step 3: Add Structure and Definition to Your Face

Your even base is ready, now it’s time to give that base a little more edge and structure. Take a fluffy brush and your bronzer and apply areas you want to be highlighted. Even better, take a contour and create a completely natural and heightened look by applying the bronzer around the perimeter of your face and on your cheekbones. Contour your nose and your cheeks and voila! You have a perfectly sharp visage. Make sure you get a contour that is at least a few shades darker than your actual skin color, for your features to pop!

      Step 4: Make it Glow

Once you're done adding definition to your facial features, it's time to take a step ahead and add some glow to your skin. Start by taking a fluffy makeup brush and a soft brush, apply them to the apple of your cheeks, and gently draw them upwards towards your temples. Blend well and give your cheeks a natural, soft, and lifted finish. Now take on a highlighter and apply them on the high points of your cheeks, a little on your chin to add that natural shine and have your skin looking radiant around the clock!

Step 5: Get Started with Your Eyes

Now that the base steps are done, it’s time to work out your eye area. Ready your eyebrow pencil, mascara, eyeshadow, and eyeliner, and get started. First, shape up your eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil. You can add a strong eyebrow gel into the mix, to keep those brow hairs in place, and fill up your sparse brow hair even better. However, if you are already gifted with thick eyebrows, a little work with the eyebrow pencil should do you justice.

Next, grab your eyeshadow palette and a flat brush. First color your lips, then apply a little color onto your crease and lift it up with some highlighter along your brow bone. However, there are no fast and hard rules. You can go for a subtle look, a shiny look, a bold matte, or a gorgeous smokey eye. Look up some designs in your free time and put them to the test.

The next requirement for your eye makeup is eyeliner. You can get a water liner, a pencil, or any of the various formulas you’ll find online. Draw along your waterline and give your eyes a sharp and defined look. Finish off by applying a good quality mascara that doesn’t make your lashes sticky and heavy. Add volume to your lashes and make your eyes pop!

Step 6: How to do a Proper Lip Color

Once the rest of your face is done and ready, it's time to pay attention to your pout. When prepping your face, you can use a good lip scrub to get rid of any dry skin and flakes off of your lips. First grab a lip liner that is a few shades lighter or darker than your actual lip color, depending on the look you want. Outline your lips with it, and make sure you apply a layer of lip primer or foundation before you get started with your lip.

Once you’ve lined your lips, grab your lip color and fill in. If you have thinner lips and want a more filling pout, you can always use your lip liner, a little outside your lip line.

Step 7: Finish off With a Setting Spray

Once everything is done, you need to make sure everything stays in place. Otherwise, your makeup can end up looking messy in a matter of hours, depending upon the longevity of your used products. But it's better to be safe than sorry. Take a setting powder or a setting spray, and apply a few spritzes on your face, locking in the makeup. It’ll also keep from ruining your party makeup and have it settle into lines.

Sweep, sweep, blend, and that are the steps to creating a beginner makeup routine. Again, remember there’s no scripture on how to do your makeup the exact, right way. These are some of the basic steps, but you can always experiment and get into a comfortable routine of your own.

Choosing Makeup for Various Skin Types

The key to becoming skilled in doing your makeup right is to know your skin first. Understand its needs, and keep it nourished, for makeup always looks best on healthy skin.

      For Dry Skin

Do you feel your skin tightening up daily? Does it sometimes appear lifeless and lackluster? Then you have dry skin, and not treating it right can be uncomfortable to downright painful.

Multiple factors can lead to drying out your skin, from hot showers to excess exfoliation, or even simply aging. So, what’s the solution? Enough hydration.

The obvious solution would be to invest in a good moisturizer, preferably cream-based. Other than that, here are a few tips when working with makeup.

      • Always use an oil-based makeup remover. If you don't have any at hand, simply using a mixture of coconut or almond oil and water will also do the job.
      • Opt for a hydrating liquid foundation that’ll provide the necessary nourishment without greasing up your face.
      • Dry skin only appears dull due to the layer of dead skin cells that form on the top layer of your skin. This is why using a cleanser every day and exfoliating the dead skin cells at least once a week, is much needed. But remember to moisturize thoroughly after. Use a moisturizer every day and night.
      • Reach for a cream concealer to have your skin appear dewy and soft. In fact, cream formulas are the best option for any and every makeup product you buy, from lipstick to blush.
      • Don’t go overboard with powdered makeup, even if you do use any.
      • Get a quality facial mist, and spritz it on anywhere around the day whenever you feel your skin getting dry.
      • Do not use matte or non-transferable products as they tend to dry out your skin even further. And even if you, make sure to apply a moisturizing base before you do. For instance, use a layer of lip balm before you apply your lipstick. But don’t make it a daily habit.

Dry skin if not taken care of can lead to wrinkles, fine lines, irritation, and can dull down your appearance. Follow these tips to enjoy soft, supple, young, and radiant skin.

      For Oily Skin

While the problem with dry skin is the lack of oil, here your trouble is the excess of it. The best part is that you’ll always enjoy a natural shine, whereas the worst part is that it’ll also cause uneasy breakouts. So, here's your guide to treating your oily skin right:

      • Use a salicylic acid-based face cleanser, and if possible use makeup that uses the same, helping you treat your skin all the time, making it look gorgeous. It'll calm your irritated skin, as well as help with breakouts and any skin issues that you face. Salicylic acid is the best companion to oily skin.
      • Use a foundation or any base product that has antibacterial properties, before you go on to do the rest of your makeup. So, pathogens can’t infect your skin and cause inflammation.
      • Hydration is still a necessity. So opt for a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid. That'll help your skin retain the necessary moisture without making it feel greasy and clogged up.
      • Don’t go for cream-based makeup as it’ll only clog up your skin more.
      • Larger facial pores are what cause the breakouts with oily skin. Glycolic acid-based products can help with that and reduce the appearance of pores.
      • Go for serum, gel, or powder-based sunscreens, and you can limit the moisturizing routine for the night. However, your level of oil secretion will vary with people. Oily skin too can get dry and if you do feel your skin doing the same, level up the moisturization.
      • You can go for pressed powder-based foundations and concealers. Get a mattifying primer to tag along with your makeup routine.
      • Use a gentle exfoliator at least two to three times a week to deal with the excess sebum.
      • Get a translucent setting powder to hold your makeup in place and not have it run down.
      • If you want to create a successful matte look, blotting sheets will help you out.

      For Normal Skin

Since you’ve hit the jackpot, you won’t really require many remodifying products, for there’s nothing to treat. However to keep it perfectly fine and not have it lackluster, you still need to take proper care of it. Here are a few suggestions to help you with that:

      • Settle for a lightweight moisturizer and a serum that has nourishing properties to keep your skin from aging or from becoming dull.
      • Instead of using a moisturizer and a sunscreen, use a tinted SPF moisturizer to keep from greasing up your skin.
      •  Feel free to experiment till you build healthy skincare and makeup routine. For chances are most products will be suitable for you. Your best option would be to create a balance in your products. For instance, if you’re using a cream-based foundation, settle for a setting powder instead of spray. Create a blend of both matte and cream-based products.

No one really has normal skin. What can be identified as normal skin might just be combination skin, where you have both a mixture of dry and oily skin. More than it is a skin type, it can be termed as healthy skin for it causes the most minimum breakouts.

      For Combination Skin

For people with combination skin, you’ll have a mix of dry and oily skin. And to treat it right, you’ll also need to bag a couple of products more than normal which are the best makeup for combo skin. You can also try and find multi-tasking products that can help replenish your skin. Apart from that here are your tips when working with the best makeup for combo skin.

      • Use a gentle gel or cream-based cleanser and apply to a lightweight moisturizer that is oil-free.
      • Invest in serums and solutions to treat your oily zones while at the same time hydrating the rest of your face.
      • Use a matte primer for your T-zone and other oily zones to control the oil secretion.
      • When buying a foundation, it's best to go for one with medium coverage. Keep the application light and use a sponge to dab it, on the dry parts of your skin. Use a buffing brush when working with oily zones in your skin.
      • Get your makeup products according to the formula that’ll suit your skin best. That means, if your cheeks are dry, get a cream-based blush. Similarly use a powder concealer on your nose, if there’s excess oil secretion there, and so on.

      For Acne Prone Skin

With the changing environmental conditions, anyone and everyone are prone to getting acne. And if your skin is prone to getting acne more than the average, these tips will serve your wonders:

      • Take a few extra steps in prepping your skin and wash it off with warm water. Use a cleanser that is specific for remedying acne.
      • Using a matte primer can help smoothen your pores. Sheeny and illuminating primers might work in highlighting the breakouts.
      • Acne means you'll have plenty of redness on your skin. Use a green-based color corrector to treat the red spots. You can use a concealer after having applied the corrector, simply using a concealer won’t do the job.
      • When shopping for makeup products, reach out for products that are specialized for acne-prone skin. Otherwise, make sure these are lightweight and oil-free solutions. Don’t go overboard in trying to cover up your skin, as it’ll only do worse for your skin by suffocating the epidermis.
      • Switch up your makeup products to even lighter solutions when you anticipate your menstrual cycle appearing. Or keep track of when your skin is breaking out, and make the shift accordingly. Sticking to a monotonous routine won't help you remedy your acne.
      • When opting for makeup with SPF protection, make sure these products consist of zinc or other mineral options. These act as an anti-inflammatory remedy.
      • Don't use makeup or skincare products with alcohol or other drying-out ingredients, although the idea may seem appealing. Let your skin be on its natural cycle, rather than having you dry out your breakouts.

      For Sensitive  Skin

For people with sensitive skin, you need to take some extra care to keep your skin from breaking out. How do you know your skin is sensitive? If you experience reddened skin and irritation more than often, then chances are you do. So here’s what you need to do:

      • Use a medicated cleanser that has a few extra-nourishing and healing properties on its plate.
      • Use mineral-based cleansers instead of using micellar water or an average oil-based product.
      • Keep your skincare and makeup routine gentle on your skin. Take some time apart from your day, to take care of your skin.
      • Do not forget to clean up your makeup products daily, or it’ll lead to irritation and inflammation.
      • Don’t use much liquid makeup as the water base can retain more bacteria. Based would be to stick to solid compact or creme stick based products.
      • Do not use expired makeup. While this is ideal advice for any skin, you need to be extra cautious if you have sensitive skin.
      • Do not go heavy with your makeup. Buy products that offer lightweight coverage. Too many pigmented products can dry out your skin. So to help with that opt for products that aren’t as pigmented. For instance, reach for a BB cream instead of a foundation. Similarly, when working with powdered products, make sure you brush off the excess.

      The Different Foundation Formulas

Not everyone’s skin functions the same way. And that is why today the cosmetic industry has concocted variations of solutions to suit everyone’s needs better. No more do you have to stick to heavy and patchy foundations. There are solutions that vary in ingredients, coverage, consistency, texture, application, and more. Let’s dig into the types, to help you understand which product is the best suit for your skin.

      • Stick:

Stick foundations are a handy solution, for you can carry them anywhere and can also act as a primer. Make sure you find your ideal shade and apply it lightly. The goal is to make your skin look natural, healthy, and flawless, not patchy and cakey. The cream-based easy application glides right off on your skin and offers good coverage even with light application. However, if you feel that you need a little more build-up, apply directly to the target areas and then blend it in. Before you use your stick foundation, prep your skin well or the application may come off as unappealing. And last of all, do not apply multiple layers.

      • Powder:

Powder foundations are ideally applied on oily skins. The pressed-on powder format helps by absorbing the excess oil. However, if your skin has too much oil secretion, the foundation may get clumpy. Moreover, they aren’t an ideal suit for dry skin for the light to medium coverage application, and won't really fill up the fine lines, wrinkles, and blemishes, if any. However, if you want a subtle and natural look, without going to town on your foundation, powdered solutions are a great solution. Make sure you provide enough hydration to your skin before applying the powder, to provide better and longer coverage. These are also great for people with sensitive skin.

      • Liquid:

When one says the foundation, the most popular type that comes to mind is the liquid one. These offer long-lasting wear, are easier to apply and blend, and some even come with a hydrating formula, if you’re worried about the mattifying ones. Most liquid foundations offer gorgeous, matte, and dewy finishes and are the most versatile suit to most makeup looks. Moreover, these offer medium to full coverage, thus being the needed savior for high-end events. Since the foundation makes for the base of your makeup, it becomes troublesome to reapply later and have it come off with an effortless and natural finish, which is why the long-wearing liquids just carry you throughout the day without much of a hassle. However, the trouble with liquid formulas is that the thick application can clog up your pores, and if the formula isn't equipped for daily use, it can cause long-term damaging effects on your skin when you do.

      • Serum:

Do you have oily skin, and aren’t satisfied with the powder foundation’s longevity? Serum foundations might be what you’re looking for. These, unlike liquid foundations, offer a lighter wearing formula which is water and much thinner, and even easier to spread and blend. These also offer medium to light coverage. However, when working with serum foundations you need to be quick on your feet, as they set in much quicker. Take a flat foundation brush and apply it evenly. Although serum foundations do offer longer wear than powdered solutions, liquid foundations still remain ahead in terms of long-lasting effects.

      • Tinted Moisturizer:

Want subtle and effortless foundation wear that leaves your skin looking young and bright? Tinted moisturizers don’t really cover up your blemishes heavily, for they offer a more sheer coverage. However on the summer days, when wearing foundation feels like a dreadful idea, tinted moisturizers are an absolute savior. Moreover, the dewy and evening skin appearance that it offers is absolutely mesmerizing.

      • BB and CC creams:

Looking for similar lightweight formulas? These creams come in a solution targeted at hydrating and nourishing your skin, whereas at the same time offer a natural tint and splash of color to your skin. BB stands for blemish balm, whereas CC is color correcting. These are relatively creamier solutions, and CC creams often even come with anti-aging properties. Want a natural satiny finish? These will work well with your foundation needs.

      • Mousse:

If you think liquid foundations are the champion product for their popularity, think again. The most versatile formula is offered by the mousse foundations which are suitable for all skin types. In spite of their medium to full coverage promises, the whipped and bubbly formula is light on the feel and can even come with nourishing properties. The whipped air bubbles make sure that your pores don’t get clogged and offer a gentle matte finish. However, the only con is their shorter wear period. If you’re planning to go for a full-day event, these won’t be of much help.

Learning to Choose the Right Foundation Shade

A wrong shade of foundation can be the only difference between a successful, stunning makeup job to a botched job. It’s very easy to go wrong with the foundation, and that’s why you need to do your research before you choose the perfect foundation shade for your skin. We don’t want your face looking a different shade than your neck, or turning your makeup dull. And to help you with that, here's your checklist for choosing a suitable product.

      Knowing Your Skin Undertones

There are two ways to learn your skin undertone. First is the sun test. For this, all you need to do is study your skin when you're out in the sun. If you see it reddening, that means you have cooler undertones. If your skin is prone to getting more tanned under the sun, then you have warmer undertones.

Now let’s take a step further to make sure about your assessment. Look at the veins on your wrist. If they appear green then you have a warmer undertone. If they appear blue, then your undertones are cooler. And a mix of both implies you have neutral undertones.

      Find Your Skin Tone

Skin tones can be usually divided into four categories - Light, medium, dusky and dark. You can find a more detailed color chart online and find your exact skin tone. Remember, your skin undertone is independent of your skin tone. And once you do, opt for a foundation a few shades lighter. Once you wear your foundation, it'll react with your skin and turn a little darker with time, which is why you need to choose a shade or two lighter. However, don't settle on color without doing a swatch test first. And remember, you want an effortless and smooth finish, and not look like a ghost, so don’t go too light.

Do a Swatch Test the Right Way

People often go wrong with their foundation shade, because the common practice is trying a swatch test on their wrists. However, the skin tone on your hand and face can vary drastically. Moreover, you need a shade that matches both your face and neck.

Once you know your skin tone and undertone, you’ll still have a few options at hand. Select your top three choices and try them one by one together along your jawline. Settle for the best match. Trying the swatch test on your jawline will help you settle for the best suitable shade for both your neck and face. And finally, be patient. Once the foundation settles in, it can end up turning orange or into an unfavorable skin tone, upon reacting with your skin and surroundings. So make your final choice, after 5-10 minutes of trying it out.

      Consider the Season

Even your surrounding weather conditions can affect how your foundation appears. For instance, during winters settling on too much of a lighter shade, can have your skin looking dull and pale. Similarly, in summer the outside sun, humidity, and warmth tend to turn your skin warmer and your foundation is affected as well. So your summer foundation shade needs to be lighter than your winter pick.

Select the Amount of Coverage You Need and the Ideal Texture

This is mostly independent of your skin tone, and more on your skin type. If your skin tends to have lesser breakouts, a foundation that offers sheer coverage will do the job fine and will also be comfortable. Similarly, your choice of foundation can also vary in texture and application, depending upon the finish you want. For instance, do you want a dewy or matte look? A serum or liquid foundation will be the ideal pick accordingly.

      How to Correctly Apply Concealer

Whether it’s working with a concealer or foundation, the key is to apply in sheer layers and then gradually go for the build-up, till you have your desired results. There’s no tight-bound rule for applying concealer, but here are a few steps that’ll give you a basic idea:

      • Once your foundation has settled in, keep your concealer brush ready at hand or you can simply use your finger.
      • Apply a few dots starting from the inner corner of your eye, along with your dark circles, and towards your temple. Then slowly dab it in with your finger or brush, till it’s properly blended.
      • The next target area is the area around your nose. Apply a few dots and then do the same motions with your brush till it's properly blended. This covers up any redness around your nose.
      • Now it’s time to work with any remaining breakouts and scars. For breakouts make sure to use a primer before you use concealer, to give it something to grip onto. In case of scars, use a creamy and light concealer for raised scars and a thick, matte concealer for flatter scars.
      • If you’re left with any remaining uneven spots such as your chin or mouth, you can work your concealer in here.

After your work is done, make sure to use a setting powder to ensure it sticks. Now that you know how to work your concealer, let’s read up on the guide to selecting the right shade choice for you. You can also take a step further and make your work easier for you by finding and settling on the best foundation and concealer combo for your skin.

How to Choose the Right Concealer Shade

Tip 1. Choose the same or a shade lighter than that of your foundation.

Tip 2. Check if the shade is a flattering match under natural lighting and not under the bright lighting of a store.

Tip 3. Don’t settle for a single shade of concealer. Choose a shade lighter if your goal is to work on lightening the darker areas such as under your eyes.

Tip 4. A concealer can also make for a great contour. For that, you need to choose a few shades darker than your skin tone. But don't go too drastically different from the tone of the concealer you’ve kept for your blemishes.

Tip 5. Don’t forget your skin’s undertones, when choosing a concealer.

Tip 6. If you want a concealer that tackles the redness in your skin, go for a green concealer. Similarly, a yellow concealer should help you cover up areas with blue and purple tones, such as around broken capillaries.

Tip 7. A peach or orange-toned concealer should help you properly clear up dark spots on your skin. The lighter your skin tone, the lighter should be the concealer such as a peach. And the darker your skin tone, the more orange you need your concealer to be. To correct the color on your face, just remember to go for a shade opposite to the color that needs to be corrected.

      How to Apply Primer

People often tend to skip this step of using a Facial Primer, but the benefits of using one are too invaluable to just let go. It’s the perfect step that acts as a bridge between your skincare and makeup routine, helping your skin become a smooth glowing canvas, and also transforming itself into a surface that holds the makeup on longer. So, especially if you are getting ready for a long and busy day ahead, it's necessary that you do not skip this step.

Now there are several kinds of primer available on the market, defining their use. For instance, there are primers specific for the eye or the lip. There are primers that focus on hydrating your skin, illuminating it or helping in color correction, and so on. Choose wisely and according to your priorities.

Now let’s take a look at a brief tutorial on how to apply primer.

Step 1. Prepping your skin before you use your primer is absolutely necessary. Use a facial cleanser, exfoliate if needed, and then put on a thin film of light moisturizer and let it sink in.

Step 2. Use sunscreen before you use your primer unless you're using a blended product. Once all the products have set in properly, take a little amount of primer on your hand. And then little by little, apply the primer with your fingertips slowly blending it in. The primer will not only help you build an even canvas but also help your skin with a gorgeous glow, that you might even realize you won’t need any foundation after it. And even if you do, use foundation or any other makeup product, make sure the primer has set in fully. It should also help tackle redness, smoothing out your skin’s surface.

      Different Types of Makeup Brushes

Any makeup enthusiast will have a bunch of makeup brushes in their kit, as they help with attaining a precise and flawless finish. No one wants to work hours on their makeup and then end up messing it with an out-of-line lipstick or an uneven blush and so on. So let’s cover the commonly available type of makeup brushes and how they can be used:

      1. Foundation Brush:

This’ll be the first brush out of your bag when you start with your makeup.  A foundation brush can vary in length, but the longer brushes are usually easier to work with. These also come with two kinds of tops, a flat one and one that looks like a paintbrush. You can use either or both for flawless blending.

      1. Concealer Brush:

Since here the concerned area is much smaller, a concealer brush usually just looks like a mini version of the foundation brush - it’s small with a flat and dense top.

      1. Eye Shadow Brushes:

Even if you don’t invest in a number of makeup brushes, an eyeshadow brush is something you can’t work without. Here again, to create a nicely detailed eyeshadow look you’ll need a number of brushes varying in size and edge.

For instance, the first in use is the flat eyeshadow brush which is used to paint just your lid. A much more dense and pointed brush is used to paint on the crease of your eyelids. The third in use is the blending brush which is sized just between the two aforementioned types. This is used to finish up your eyeshadow look blending out the exterior. This is a versatile tool and can be used to do your contour, highlighting, and more.

      1. Blusher Brush:

The blusher brush comes with a soft, large, and rounded head, and is the second most commonly found brush in makeup kits. These make your blush application effortless with a professional edge.

      1. Lip Brush:

Do you love the crisp lip paint jobs on the fashion models on magazine covers and celebrities? You can get the same sleek and detailed look by applying your lipstick with a narrow and angled lip brush, which helps you get the edge you’re aiming for.

      1. Fan Powder Brush:

More than working on a specific area, the fan powder brush is an inexpensive brush that is dedicated to a function. The flat fan-like top helps you in sweeping off the excess eyeshadow, blush, or any excess loose powder on your skin.

      1. Bronzer Brush:

A bronzer brush looks like an angled blush brush with a wide and fluffy top, which helps you do a precise job with the bronzer. Sweep the brush gently in motions shaping a ‘3’ along your forehead and jawbones, lightly on your nose, and wherever needed for a flawless and professional finish.

      1. Highlighter Brush:

The Highlight brush is somewhat shaped like a fan powder brush but comes with much thinner synthetic bristles. Move the brush in a side-to-side motion along your cheekbones, a little dab on your nose and chin

      1. Mascara Brush:

A mascara brush looks the most different from most of your makeup brushes and it comes with stiff, curled, and small bristles around the top. These can also help you with your brows, along with your lashes.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Using a Makeup Sponge

A makeup sponge can be used for practically blending any product on your face, and is the most commonly used product in any makeup bag. Today, the beauty blender that we see has gone through many transitions and has reached a stage where it offers plenty of possibilities, and is quite easy to use. Here’s the best way you can put a makeup sponge to use:

      Soak the Sponge

Surprisingly, many are oblivious to the fact that before you use a makeup sponge you need to dampen it. Hold it under a running tap, till it's completely wet. You’ll see it almost get double in size, and that’s what helps the sponge not absorb too much of the makeup as it is already retaining the moisture

Squeeze to Let the Excess Water Out

You need a damp makeup sponge to help you blend the makeup and not throw water on it. So squeeze it tight to let the excess water out, so that it’s just damp enough to work on your skin and not absorb in the makeup, wasting the product.

      Dab Don’t Rub

Lightly bounce the makeup sponge where you want to blend in the makeup product effortlessly, giving you a gorgeous finish. Foundation, BB Cream, Concealer, and the makeup sponge will work for almost any and every makeup product. But the trick is to lightly dab so that it does give you the effortless finish you want and does not result in lines and streaks around your face later on. If you’re working with areas that need precision such as under the eyes or on your nose, you can use the pointed end for better application. The wider bottom can be used for larger surfaces like the forehead, cheeks, chin, etc.

      Rehydrate if Needed

If you’re working long hours on a complete face of makeup, you need to make sure your sponge is moistened enough. Keep a facial mist or a spray bottle of water with you and keep spraying whenever it starts drying off.

Using the Makeup Sponge for Concealer, Contour, Blush, and More

When working with concealers make sure to use the smaller tip of the beauty blender. In case you’re not using an oval sponge, make use of the smaller area of your sponge. Dapple it underneath your eyes, and the area surrounding your nose, where you’ve used the concealer, and in short strokes blend it in.

Once you’re done with the concealer, take on a flatter surface on your sponge, and in similar short and light strokes, blend it adding a striking definition to your face. Using the makeup sponge in such a way helps by not streaking up your face.

You’ll need the bigger, rounded end when working with your blush, even if you’re using powdered formula. Either way, dab the sponge first onto the product, and then in short strokes dab it onto the apples of your cheeks.

For using a highlighter, you’ll again need the narrower edge. Apply the product to your skin, and then with precision dab and blend it in for an effortless shine. You can invest in a mini-sponge and work with it if you feel you need more precision in your work.

      Cleaning Your Sponge

Since you’re using a makeup sponge on your skin, it is also very necessary that you take proper care of it. Bacteria or any pathogen growth on the sponge may lead to breakouts on your skin. Take a gentle cleanser, soap, or shampoo and rinse your sponge under warm water. Take the cleanser on your palm, add a little water and swirl and squeeze the sponge till there’s enough foam. Massage each side of the sponge gently and then rinse it off. Make sure you wash the sponge until there are no soap suds left in the sponge.

      The Common Types of Blush

The world of makeup has drastically evolved from what it had been even a few years back. Before speaking of blush, all we could imagine was a compact powder solution, however, now there are many variants to the mix - Liquid, Gel. Cream, Tinted, Stain, Stick, Pressed Powder, Loose or Mineral Powder, and so on. There have also been variations in shades, for instance, there are blushes that are glittery, shimmery, ombre, matte, nude, and so on. Let’s discuss the commonly found types of blush in the market.

      • Gel: The gel blush has become quite popular lately, as it is versatile for most skin types. Whether you have dry or oily skin, that'll help you adequately by adding moisture but not grease. This also has an excellent grip on your skin and also offers generous longevity even in the summertime. The gel blush offers sheer coverage and light color, which is again ideal for that is what we usually aim for when working with blush. However, for people with darker skin, any and every gel blush may not work as well for you. There are however great alternate options that can give them the shine and color they’re looking for.
      • Cream: Cream-based blushes are easy to work with and feel completely weightless on your cheek, considering you choose a quality formula. Want that natural dewy splash of color onto your cheeks? You’ll love a cream-based blush. If you tend to have dry skin or combination skin with drier cheeks, a cream blush will provide you with the hydration you need. However, for people with oily skin, it’s a big no.  And to apply it you can simply use the tip of your finger and apply it in thin layers.
      • Stain and Tint: Don’t want to settle for a subtle glow and want the color to really pop? You’ll love a Cheek tint or a stain. Both are quite similar in their ways of working. They are fast drying and can be easily applied with your fingers. However, you can use a brush to work it more safely. Don’t go too heavy on these, as they may feel uncomfortable on your skin. Moreover, it’ll also add an unappealing amount of color, which can end up ruining your look. Make sure you choose the right color of blush and apply it little by little. These offer impressive longevity, and you can carry them effortlessly around the clock.
      • Liquid:  A liquid blush works like any other liquid makeup. Add it in very little amounts and blend it in with a finger or sponge. These are heavily pigmented and also offer great long-lasting wear. You’ll also find a great variety of hues. But, make sure at the end of the day, you clean it off well or the liquid might end up clogging your pores.
      • Stick A texture and consistency of a cream blush, but even easier to apply and great on the feel, that’s what a cream blush brings to the table. Simply apply the stick directly to your face, and you can use it or your fingers to blend. However, like any cream blush, the stick is only ideal for people with dry or combination skin, but not oily.
      • Pressed and Loose Powder: These are the old-timers that’ll remain evergreen in the makeup world. If you’re someone who prefers working with mineral and liquid foundations, you’ll enjoy using a compact or pressed powder blush as well, as they add a generous pigmented depth that you’ll absolutely adore. Loose or mineral powders, on the other hand, are ideal for people with sensitive skin. Don’t settle on just the slight pop of color, mix the powder with a little bronzer or highlighter and add on a natural shine along with color.

Finish Off With a Makeup Fixer - Make your Makeup Last All Day

A makeup fixer is what saves the day and the precious time and effort that you put into doing your makeup. After all, nothing’s more harassing after having spent hours on a look and having it all ruined by sweat or other affecting conditions. Here’s the right way to use a makeup fixer:

      Step 1. Shake the Bottle.

This is a necessary step for most liquid makeup products, for the ingredients inside the liquid tend to separate when they have been sitting idle for a while. Shake thoroughly but gently to avoid any dripping or splotches on your finished look.

      Step 2. Get Spritzing

Hold the bottle a few inches away so that the spray can cover every inch of your makeup. First, move the spray in an X-formation and then in a T. If you feel that you've missed any spot, you can spray on the target areas directly, but chances are you won’t need it.

      Choose the Right Blush

Blush is a very subtle part of a makeup look but it also has the capability to make or break the look. The tome of the blush can give you a warm look which makes you look lively and fresh. It can also make your face look like a clown’s makeup or completely wash out the face colors. Choosing the perfect shade of blush would depend on your makeup look but also on your skin tone. There is a general guide you can follow and understand to know which tones of blush will suit your skin tone the best.

      • Fair Skin-

If you have fair skin, you would need very subtle blushes to add warmth to your skin. With fair skin, you should go for light pinks and salmon blush colors, especially if you have cool undertones. These colors will give a little bit of warmth that your makeup looks need. These nude tones look even better if your lip color closely resembles the blush color. If you have warmer undertones, you might want to go for warmer pinks or nude-ish corals but these colors should be light as well. You can go for creme blushes but it would be better if you choose powder blushes because it’s easier to control the pigment. You can make it as dark or light as you want by applying more or less product.

      • Medium-

If you have medium skin, you need to go for colors that are a little warmer. Blush colors which are warm corals and darker peaches will look great on your skin. These colors will be a staple need for your everyday makeup looks. You need to keep them around for going to work or plans that you make in the day. If you are going for heavy makeup you would need colors that are a little darker. Pinkish reds or true reds like cherry colors are your best friend with heavy smokey eyes, a sharp contour, and dark lips.

      • Dark Skin-

Getting a good blush for darker skin tones can be difficult if you don’t know what you are looking for. Lighter red colors are too contrasting on such skin tones which makes the makeup look an eyesore. If you have darker skin, you will look great in darker berry, Fuschia, or reddish-brown tones. If you have cooler undertones in your skin, reds with purple tints.

      A Guide to Setting Powders

Creating a makeup look is always fun and a great way to hone your creativity. However, all the excitement and enthusiasm fade away when we go out in the heat. After a while, notice that the whole makeup look has melted and become patchy, losing all its glamor. The best way to prevent such blunders from happening daily is to use a setting powder.

Setting powder is a very fine translucent powder that helps with exactly what its name suggests- it helps ‘set’ the makeup. Setting the makeup is essentially trying to preserve the makeup for as long as possible. Incorporating this small product into your makeup will reduce the necessity of reapplying or constantly retouching the makeup look.

Nearly all base makeup products like concealer and foundation are wet or liquid-based products. Once they are exposed to the heat, they have the tendency to lose their consistency and melt off of our faces. A setting powder is dry and mattifying which is applied over the wet products. This sheer powder helps lock in the pores so that a person sweats less, even through intense heat. If there is less sweat, there are lesser chances of the makeup rubbing off.

Choosing the correct setting powders for you is very important. There are some staple translucent powders that should work for nearly everybody. The correct setting powder would depend on your skin type and tone. For instance, if you have dry skin, any setting powder will work for you. But with oily skin, you’d need a drier or finer translucent powder so that it can block your pores better and the usual shine of your face can be controlled. Similarly, if you have fair skin, the sheer loose powder will work for you quite well and you can go with the makeup community staples without having to search. However, if you have dark or tan skin, you’d need tinted setting powder so that a sheer powder doesn’t wash out your complexion and color. Finding a tint that matches your skin tone is important and even though this search is a little difficult, it is not completely impossible.

Setting your face is very easy and takes about two minutes. You’d need your setting powder and a big fluffy brush for even application. Take the powder on the brush and remove the excess. Gently tap the product over your T-zone, under-eye area, and above the jawline. Let the powder sit for about 2 minutes and then blend it all together. This step is done right after the base makeup or right after all the liquid and neutral products have been applied. If a setting powder is applied over the colored products like blush or bronzer, their colors get muted and don't show up properly. It would be helpful to carry your setting powder if you are planning a full day of activities. If you reapply for an oil-based product like foundation, you can control the shine that comes with it by utilizing the setting powder.

A good setting powder will help make your face look matte and flawless. Once you start using a good setting powder like the Faces Canada face powder, this product will quickly become a necessary habit since you will realize how much of a difference it makes in your everyday makeup looks and how you carry them outside.

      How to Use Loose Powder

A translucent or compact powder has been a staple in our lives ever since we were kids. Whenever we had to go to any party, the only makeup that was applied to our faces was a thin layer of this powder and maybe a little bit of kohl. And we haven’t stopped using them ever since.

Finding a loose powder that matches our skin and does its job might be a little difficult but once we get them, our lives become infinitely easier. This powder can be used in various ways to help with different kinds of makeup struggles.

      • Lipstick-

The matte effect has recently become extremely popular and everybody likes the dull yet intense look that comes with it. However, always using matte lipsticks can be a little harmful to your lips, especially if you have dry skin. They might suck the moisture off of your lips, making them chapped which often hurts. Using creme lipsticks isn’t as fun however and they often tend to rub off throughout the day, making reapplication a constant necessity. If you want to take advantage of both the moisture and care that a hydrating creme lipstick provides while also making it look matte and long-lasting, all you will need is a little bit of loose powder.

Apply a few coats of your favorite lipstick, making sure that it is opaque. Take a little bit of loose powder on a fluffy brush and tap it lightly on the lip, covering the lipstick. You will notice that the lipstick has magically turned matte! This not only makes the lipstick look good but also helps it stay for longer periods of time, so you can easily wear a creme lipstick throughout a workday without having to reapply it every few hours.

      • Lashes-

If you are insecure about the length of your lashes or want to make them look longer and more voluminous without using false lashes, you can use loose powder. Apply a layer of loose powder with a flat brush on your eyelashes and apply your regular mascara. Once the mascara is dry, repeat the same process and do so about thrice or four times. You will notice that your eyelashes are looking fluffier and denser than ever before. The layers of the loose powder stick to the lashes very subtly, giving this effect.

      • As a base-

Even though the loose powder is used mostly as a form of setting, after the base makeup is done, it can also be used as a great base itself. People tend to use loose powder as an eye base since eye primers are not readily available. You can just apply a thin coat of loose powder on your eyelids and since these powders help control sweat, they make your eye makeup much more long-lasting. Since eyeliners have a creamy texture, the chances of the theme melting off due to sweat are much higher. An eyeliner or simple eyeshadow look will stay on your eyes for longer than they used to with this small step.

      • Dry Shampoo-

A huge fashion emergency is when you have a sudden plan and you haven’t washed your hair in a few days. Oily and greasy hair can be controlled easily by applying a little bit of loose powder near the roots of the hair and then combing it out properly. Make sure you wash your hair thoroughly once you come to prevent clogging up the pores or hair follicles on your scalp.

      FAQs

Can I use moisturizer as a base?

While facial primers make for a better base, you can use moisturizers as well. Moisturizers have their own set of benefits and can help provide a better grip for your makeup, also keeping your skin hydrated around the day. Moisturizers also give a smoothening effect to your makeup, making your skin look soft and flawless.

How many foundations should I apply to?

Too much foundation can make your makeup appear extremely cakey and will be heavy on the feel. So it's best to start small. Apply a little on your forehead, chin, nose, and under your eyes, and then dab it on. You can apply more if you feel any area seems uncovered.

Can I apply for a foundation every day?

Wearing a cheap foundation on a daily basis can be disastrous for your skin. However, if you opt for a good branded one that has its fair share of nourishing properties, it definitely wouldn’t be a problem to wear your foundation every day.

      Where should I apply concealer?

The prime areas to apply your concealer are - mid-chin, the center of your forehead, along the bridge of your nose, under your eyes, and right above your cheekbones. You can apply in any other areas where you feel the need for coverage.

Should I dab my makeup or rub it on the skin?

Dabbing on makeup is the best way to ensure even application. Rubbing makeup, on the other hand, causes the products to ball up and look abrupt. Moreover, the former process is gentler on your skin, whereas the latter feels like force-feeding it.

Will my makeup be transfer-proof after applying makeup fixer?

Well, it strictly depends on the formula of the fixer and its tenacity to provide a strong grip on your makeup. But yes, it is possible to have your makeup become transfer-proof with a fixing spray as it'll help the makeup cling onto your skin much better
